Residential units for fishermen - Ras Hilal Fishing port, Libya, 2009
The Ras Hilal Fishing Port is a fish harbor in Libya on the eastern coast. Dr. Wael Aboneama was invented by the engineering consultant group in Dubai which was a joint venture with J&P to design this project. The success of this project encouraged J&P and the engineering group in Dubai to assign the design of Tripoli marine in Libya to Dr. Wael Aboneama. The Libyan Government wanted to build a tide breaker to provide a place for fishing boats to park during monsoon periods. Fishermen at this harbor make a living from inshore fishing and shallow sea creatures. The harbor is also a center for fish and produces selling, such as dairy products, organic fruits, and vegetables. The Ras Hilal harbor is accessible within driving distance. It contains a fish factory, boats and ships workshop, cafeteria, restaurant, Masjid, residential units for fishermen, administrators, medical service building, fishing training center, services such as post office, and fish market. The owner insists to design the project based on the old Medetrainian style. Also, the fishermen's homes should match their lifestyle with Arabian aspects otherwise the fishing port will be empty and the fishermen will refuse to live inside it. After studying the fishermen's culture in this country Dr. Wael found the owner has a great point of view. Unfortunately, the project construction has been stopped after the Libyan revolution.
