Food court - Al-Rehab Shopping Center, Phase 5 competition, 2012
The appearance of this food court was another important issue considered and not neglected when planning food court restaurant design. It was depended on several elements such as theme, lighting, functional, and operational designs. The decision of the appearance of this food court focused on the attraction and reflecting the character of the services being provided in all restaurants. The project plot lies in between the 4th and 5th phases of the Rehab city, in the intersection of the main internal ring road (Talaat Mostafa road) with Othman Ibn ‘Affan Street, wrapped by a secondary backward street, to be surrounded by streets from all directions. The project is located in the center of residential apartment buildings. The design approach is a trial to be a contemporary interpretation of Islamic urban fabric. The shopping center is trying to match the historic Arabic market pattern through the main spine (Qasaba) and linear circulation paths surrounded by commercial fronts formed by masses, in which the visitors pass through different experiences of light & shadow, openness, and enclosure, motion & rest; along with a variable visual experience through successive focal point elements at nodes and through angular paths and plazas. The design challenge was to create a dynamic, vibrant, and inviting shopping center through the massing of adjacent buildings that are variable within a unity of composition. The Arabic pattern reflects the concepts of the open-air mall and outdoor shopping experience which are the latest trends in the design of commercial projects. Plot Area: 25,087 m2, Maximum footprint: 30% plot area, Landscape area: 34.4% plot area, Parking area: 35.6% plot area, Set back: 6m from the project boundary.
