This project required a comprehensive architectural and transportation master plan for the Tanzania–Zambia border post at Tanduma. The central design challenge was achieving the mandatory separation of traffic and operations within severely limited land allocated by the Tanzanian government, relative to the facility’s requirements. As Tanzania is Zambia’s most vital port corridor, the border experiences high two-way traffic of diverse vehicle types, with a predominance of heavy trucks. The engineering consultant group engaged Dr. Wael Aboneama as architectural consultant to travel to Tanzania and lead the design. The master plan organizes immigration, customs, inspection, and freight movements to ensure secure, efficient processing while serving two core checkpoint purposes: preventing unauthorized entry and controlling goods, including restrictions and tariff collection. It also coordinates access control, queuing, parking, and inspection zones to support safe, orderly cross-border movement. The resulting layout balances operational security, traffic circulation, and spatial constraints.
